Chester racecourse is officially recognised as Britain’s oldest racecourse,   dating back to the early sixteenth century, with 1539 cited as the year racing began. It is also thought to be the smallest racecourse of significance in England.  The racecourse lies on the banks of the River Dee. The site was once a harbour during the Roman  settlement of the city, but was closed as the river silted up making navigation impossible.    The course is flat and raced anti-clockwise or left-handed.

Also on the banks of the River Dee, set in beautiful north wales countryside, Bangor-on-Dee Racecourse stages 14 exciting jump racing fixtures a year.  The only racecourse in the country that doesn’t have a grandstand.

Aintree racecourse, home of the famous Grand National is only 1 hours drive

Harness racing is a form of horse racing in which the horses race at a specific gait (a trot or a pace). They usually pull a two-wheeled cart called a sulky, occupied by a driver.   Traditionally raced on grass tracks. Tir Prince in Towyn, only 40 minutes from the hotel,  is the only full half-mile, floodlit hard track in the country.
